From vine to bottle.
The main grape varieties on the farm include sauvignon blanc, viognier, chardonnay, chenin blanc, shiraz, pinotage and cabernet sauvignon. Weiser Riesling, pinot gris and malbec are of the more recent varieties that were planted.
Our terroir is really unique and comprise two main kinds of vineyard soil - rocky mountain slopes, where most of the Avondrood wines derive from alluvial soil with riverstone, where the Viognier are planted.
During harvest time, the days are warm and at night the mountain winds cool down the vineyards. Another factor in keeping the vineyards cool is the rocky soils. Due to the slopes and soil differences, there is quite a variation of microclimate in the different vineyard blocks.
