For the love of land and wine

Avondrood is a boutique cellar run by the Van Rensburg family who shares a passion for their land and wine.

The farm was established as the prime estate it is today by Nicolaas Christoffel van Rensburg (1923 - 1990) who was born on a farm near George in the Southern Cape. Nicolaas was a teacher and a great rugby player. He played for SWD and was part of the Springbok rugby trials in 1951. He later married Eljoh van der Merwe and in December 1959 they bought this farm and called it Avondrood - denoting the beautiful pink-red sunsets above the mountains. With hard work and enthusiasm he built the farm to a prosperous wine farm, with the grapes delivered to Louwshoek Cellar.

Albertus van Rensburg followed in his father's footsteps and has been farming on Avondrood since since 1995. After studying B.Agric. at Stellenbosch University, he went to America, where he worked on a wine farm in the Sonoma Valley, California. Here the hillside vineyards contributed to good quality wines and offered him valuable experience to working in these agricultural conditions. When he came back from America he started to develop specific mountain terroir sites for planting vineyards matching the soil type.

In 2005 Albertus established the boutique cellar on Avondrood and started with Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. The range has since expanded and also includes Viognier, Chardonnay and a red blend named The Nicholas, aptly titled after the farm's predecessor. The Avondrood magic lies in its unique terroir and every taste is one of exceptional quality.
